Two cops from the 84th Precinct with a hand—and handcuffs—in two separate arrests this summer were recently recognized for their heady police work.
In July, Officers Betty Vargas and Michael Titterton responded to a person who walked into the 84th Precinct and said he was robbed of two cell phones.
Relying on the person’s description of the perpetrator, the cops quickly canvassed the area, and arrested the suspect without incident, according to Leslie Lewis, the president of the 84th Precinct Community Council, which met Sept. 16 at St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights.
Hours later, the cops were out on patrol, preparing to subpoena a complainant, when they get a call over the police radio of another robbery. “They responded and canvassed the area, locating two suspects hiding in the bushes,” Lewis said, adding that another cell phone was recovered.
“Both these arrests they did without further incident because they are very professional,” Lewis added. “They know what they are doing.”
Both cops have spent their entire careers at the 84th Precinct. Titterton has been there six years, while Vargas has spent the past 15 years there.
Aside from wooden plaques and certificates from elected officials, the officers received warm applause from the crowd.
