Produce-starved residents of Fort Greene have a new option to get veggies by purchasing fresh crops directly from a farmer who will make weekly trips to Fort Greene Park.
This so-called “Community Supported Agriculture” program kicked off on Wednesday with the first delivery from a New Jersey farmer.
The program’s director says the program, similar to others across the city, is vital in a neighborhood that has few supermarkets.
“CSAs represent a real solution to the problem of food access,” said Jen Datka.
It couldn’t come at a better time. Developer, and possible mayoral candidate, John Catsimatidis, tore down a grocery store on Myrtle Avenue to make way for housing and a new supermarket. But that project is stalled.
Other neighborhood activists have been pushing the city to construct a supermarket in the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Flushing Avenue, but have run into opposition from preservationists who would rather save the historic and crumbling mansions known as Admirals’ Row, than raze them for a grocery.
