Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center’s Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center has been making huge strides in its advancement to chronic wound treatment.
Since its opening in 2002, the center has been instrumental in changing the lives of its patient base and has recently acquired an additional hyperbaric chamber in effort to respond more readily to the increasing need for advanced wound care & hyperbaric treatment in our community.
Kingsbrook’s Comprehensive Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center integrates state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen therapy with more traditional treatments such as antibiotic, physical and nutritional therapies to treat hard-to-heal wounds. By providing the body with 100% pure oxygen under increased pressure, the treatment can significantly improve its natural healing abilities, and increase its effectiveness in fighting infection, and promoting the growth of new tissue and blood vessels in the affected areas. The center’s professional staff has specific expertise in treating the non-healing wounds such as bed sores, radiation damage and those common in persons with diabetes.
Robert Hughes of Flatbush suffered with diabetes for 12 years. When he discovered he developed a non-healing wound via his condition, he was referred by his physician at a neighboring hospital to investigate Kingsbrook’s Hyperbaric and Wound Healing Center.
“When I came to Kingsbrook the wound was pretty bad. However I started working with the wound healing team with about two to three months of hyperbaric treatment and it was great. The wound is totally healed and I have not had any problems since then,” said Hughes, “I would definitely recommend this center to anyone dealing with a hard to heal wound like me.”
While traditionally hyperbarics are used for limb salvage and hard to heal wounds, Owen O’Donnell, an East Flatbush resident learned quickly that hyperbarics would be his saving grace.
“I actually suffered from cancer and I was due to have oral surgery. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was recommended to me as a way of stimulating saliva reproduction and preventing infection due to my past history.” After a month of intense hyperbaric treatments, not only did the hyperbaric treatment work but O’Donnell went though his surgery without any complications. “One would never think hyperbarics was relevant to my situation but it is one of those rare cases. All I can say is the staff at Kingsbrook’s Wound Care division where great from the doctors, nurses and technicians.”
