The Brooklyn Aviators sank the Danbury Whalers on Friday, harpooning a crushing 7–1 victory at the Hangar.
The triumph comes as sweet revenge for the A’s, who lost to Danbury 5–2 on Wednesday. It also marked the last regulation game between the two evenly matched squads, with each ending the season with a 5–5 record against the other. Brooklyn and Danbury are expected to meet up again during next week’s playoffs.
Danbury looked like a fish out of water when the team hit the ice at the Aviator Sports and Events Center, giving up five unanswered goals in the first and second rounds — including the first two points of Aviator right-winger Michael Thompson’s hat-trick. Aviators’ netminder Jo St Pierre blocked 19 shots to keep his team’s shutout going into the third.
Danbury managed to steal the shutout away from the A’s by sneaking a puck past St Pierre less than two minutes before the final buzzer — but not before Thompson scored the final piece of his hat trick and Aviators’ defenseman Brian Marks scored the A’s last point less than two minutes later.
