Alzheimer’s patients and caregivers got expert information on the disease as well as resources and long-term care options at an elderly care center in Brownsville on June 4.
CenterLight Healthcare’s Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly hosted a speaker from the Alzheimer’s Resource Center who took the opportunity to bring the center’s expertise to families and caregivers in need of assistance.
“It was exciting for us to be out there,” said the center’s chief executive Mary Ann Malack-Ragona. “I jumped at the opportunity, knowing I could reach families who are not getting the kind of information they need.”
Malack-Ragona spoke about the lesser-known psychiatric and behavioral symptoms of Alzheimer’s that may help someone recognize signs of the disease in a loved one, as well as dispelling misconceptions that could lead to a misdiagnosis.
Caregivers were able to seek guidance on treatment options and ask questions about managing the disease.
“That’s where the real work comes in,” said Malack-Ragona. “We’re interacting with families and what they’re dealing with and how we address that.”
June is Alzheimer’s Awareness month, and CenterLight will provide more lectures in partnership with the resource center at locations throughout the borough. Each event will feature a guest speaker and opportunities to receive expert guidance over refreshments.
CenterLight’s elderly care center offers medical and diagnostic services as well as recreational activities and transportation options for patients.
“It’s a one-stop service area,” said direct sales manager Leslie Willhoft.
