There will be something for everyone at the 43rd Annual Brighton Jubilee, which is set to return on Sunday, Aug. 25, on Brighton Beach Avenue between Corbin Place and Coney Island Avenue.
One of the most popular and culturally diverse events in Brooklyn, it is anticipated that more than 125,000 people will attend the annual event, which promises to be a celebration of Brooklyn’s diversity and its rich immigrant roots.
The jubilee was created by Pat Singer, president of a grassroots organization that she founded in 1977 during a dark chapter in Brighton’s history.
The Brighton Neighborhood Association, Inc., had declared war against neighborhood deterioration, and utilized this event to send a clear message: Brighton Beach was alive and well.
The efforts of Brighton Neighborhood Association were recognized in the Congressional Record, as well as by local, national, and international newspapers. Sen. Charles Shumer, then an Assemblyman in the 1970’s, mentored the group. The late state Sen. Donald Halperin worked with Singer to introduce important legislation for tenants so they could sustain their affordable apartments, and secure needed repairs.
“The organization is living proof that we all have it in our power to make a difference,” says Singer.
The event — which begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 6 p.m., rain or shine — offers fun for the whole family.
Blocks of international food will fill the area with delightful aromas, according to Singer. And there will tables filled with bargains galore.
“Brooklyn Crafted and Sparkling Ice will be distributing their cool delights, too,” Singer said.
Additionally, festivalgoers will get their groove on and dance to live music from four different bands, which will be featured on Brighton 14th Street:
But that’s not all there is to offer in terms of entertainment!
