The Cyclones broke their own New York–Penn League single-game attendance record by drawing 9,959 fans on Sept. 1 against Staten Island — and then broke the 10,000-fan mark for the first time at the season finale on Sept. 7.
The new marks broke the league’s previous record of 9,610 — also set by the Cyclones on Aug. 28 against Hudson Valley.
Brooklyn fans are accustomed to hearing that the Cyclones have crammed more than 9,500 people into their 7,500-seat stadium on the Boardwalk in Coney Island, but the Sept. 7 crowd of 10,073 was a surprise even to team officials.
“You couldn’t find two empty seats in the whole stadium,” said Cyclones spokesman Dave Campanero, who added that the team benefited from a convergence of seemingly random events.
“It was the last night of the Coney Island fireworks; it was our most-popular giveaway, the Brooklyn Bridge bobblehead; it was a beautiful day, so we had a great walkup crowd; and a lot of people treated it as the last Friday of the summer.”
Most of the overflow crowd watched the game from the main level promenade, and there were some delays for hot dog buyers — but a 5–4 Cyclones win made it a win-win for everyone.
