Another mega-win for Cyclones

Cyclones 11
Ironbirds 1

July 22 at MCU Park

One day after a 13-run, 20-hits barrage, the Cyclone again dominated the Ironbirds for a huge victory.

Both teams started with a case of the heat-induced blahs, with little action until the home fourth, when the Cyclones exploded for four runs — two of them on Brian Harrison’s monster blast to left.

In the next frame, the Clones put up five more runs. Nelfi Zapata and Ismael Tijerina had consecutive singles to lead off the inning before Daniel Nuno knocked them both home with a single of his own. He later scored on Javier Rodriguez’s double. Two more runs came in on a wild pitch and an error.

The ’Birds got a run in the seventh, but Muno got it back after the stretch by doubling and later scoring on a groundout.

The final run scored in the eighth on a Tijerina RBI single.

Starter Randy Fontanez was great, giving up just two hits in four solid innings, but he didn’t last long enough to get the win, which went to Todd Weldon (2 IP, 0 H, 3 Ks).

Muno was the hitting star, going 4-for-5 to lift his average to .358.

After 35 games, the once-struggling Cyclones are 19-15 and have won seven of their last 10.

The Cyclones are home vs. Connecticut Tigers at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449-8497] on July 27 at 7 pm. For info, visit www.brooklyncyclones.com.
