The Children’s Hospital at Downstate awarded scholarships to Jurrell Rodgers and Kyron Galvez for achieving academic excellence while overcoming chronic asthma.
SUNY Downstate presented the two young men with $1,000 checks from the Madu Rao Pediatric Asthma Center of Excellence Scholarship Program to help them finance their college education.
“We are extremely proud of Jurrell and Kyron. Both of them have demonstrated that young people with chronic diseases can still achieve academic excellence,” said Madu Rao, MD, professor emeritus of pediatrics at Downstate, 450 Clarkson Avenue.
Rodgers and Galvez have been coming to the center for asthma treatment from a very young age. Their asthma has been controlled through their personal dedication to taking proper care of themselves, with the help of the staff at the medical center.
The scholarship program was launched to help graduating high school students succeed in school and life, in spite of the challenges of asthma. The scholarship program was created for patients in the Pediatric Asthma Center of Excellence.
“We want to ensure that children with asthma receive excellent and consistent care. Our goal is to assist families with asthma to improve their quality of life through state-of-the art medical care,” said Haesoon Lee, MD, director of the Pediatric Asthma Center of Excellence.
