Mortar boards at the ready. The New York Methodist Hospital’s Center for Allied Health Education dished out 145 sheepskins to graduates from the Bartone School of Radiography, the School of Radiation Therapy, the School of Clinical Laboratory Science, the School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography and the EMS Institute. Councilman Mike Nelson (D–Sheepshead Bay) was the guest speaker who sent the students out into the medical world with wise words, “Health care is much more than a job. It is one of the most rewarding careers, where you really make a difference.” Graduates included Brooklyn residents Joseph Bynum, Mariya Mavasheva, Jerrilyn LoBello, Daniel Fischer (valedictorian), Moshe Stein; Hersh Rimler (valedictorian), Christopher Root, and Katherin Riffey.

Happy 20th anniversary to Clinton Hill Simply Art & Framing Gallery (hey, most marriages don’t make it that long, so 20 years is a big deal). The full-service gallery and specialty framing gallery marked the auspicious event with a year’s worth of specials. Wrapping up the October to October celebration is a 1990s art show featuring top black artists. Owner LB Brown told Standing O, “Wrapping up our 20th business year is a milestone. It has been exciting, challenging and a very proud moment as a female entrepreneur.” You said it, sister. Listen up, everyone, there is still time to enjoy the fruits of LB’s labors. It’s the biggest news ever! The city’s top-rated custom bike shop, 718 Cyclery, is moving to Brooklyn’s top-rated hood, Gowanus, on Nov. 1. “When we started to turn work away due to space constraints, we knew it was time to expand,” said owner Joe Nocella about the move.
The new space, which is five times larger then the current location on Seventh Avenue in the South Slope, will provide the necessary space to expand on frame painting, bike rentals, classes and bike tours. The mechanics will also have an opportunity to work on projects ranging from high-end racing set-ups to vintage restorations.
So ride on down and help Joe and the gang settle in at the launch party on Nov. 5, from 7 pm to whenever.

Shout out and hallelujah
Ever concerned with our well being, our beneficent Mayor Bloomberg announced that several local sustainablity projects were given grants ranging from $500 to $1,000 by Change by Us NYC, a website that enables us Noo Yawkers to connect with each other and city government. Change was launched by the city last July and focused on projects that asked the question, “How can we make our city a greener, greater place to live?” Like Brooklyn isn’t green or great enough? Hey, but a little more couldn’t hurt so let the drum roll begin. The awardees are: Bushwick City Farms, East New York 4 Gardens, Friends of Wingate Park, Olive Street Community Garden, Prospect Heights Street Tree Task Force, Sprout Rooftop Farms, and Sustainable Flatbush. “From planting new gardens to growing sustainable food, these projects will help make New York City greener and greater,” said Hizzoner.

The Food Network is scouting out individuals for a new show its developing that will highlight food entrepreneurs who have left their previous career and have little to no prior professional food experience, but are taking the risks to pursue their passion and are planning on opening a restaurant before the end of the year.
