Back-to-back blasts clear path for Clones victory

Attack of the Clone: Stefan Sabol is striking back, not out

A pair of back-to-back homers by third baseman Alexander Sanchez and left fielder Stefan Sabol powered the Cyclones past the Batavia Muckdogs on Wednesday as Brooklyn’s boys of summer kicked off a six game road trip that will take them through upstate New York and Ohio.

The game got off to a rough start as Mini Mets hurler Gabriel Ynoa plunked Batavia second baseman Breyvic Valera — the second Muckdog he faced — in the fifth then gave up a single and threw two wild pitches that took Valera home.

Valera chopped an RBI grounder up the middle to drive in designated hitter Roberto De La Cruz later in the frame, putting the score at 20, but the Clones’ bats came alive in the next inning.

First baseman Jayce Boyd hit a single off Muckdogs starter Ben Freeman and advanced to second on a wild pitch with Sanchez at bat and Sabol on deck. Sanchez crushed a two-run homer out over left field — which Sabol followed up with a solo blast over center field.

Clones reliever Paul Sewald took the mound the next frame, limiting the Muckdogs to one hit, zero walks, and zero runs for the rest of the game.

The Cyclones are now 135 on the road, far better than their 910 record in Coney Island.

The Cyclones are home again at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449–8497, www.brooklyncyclones.com] on Aug. 1 at 7 pm as they take on the Connecticut Tigers.
