They came, they swung, they conquered.

A sporty squad of celebrities — led by WFAN FM radio personalities Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti — challenged Fort Hamilton’s all-star softball team to a friendly game on may 23, marking the return of a fun and competitive event that a Fort Hamilton spokesman said was too good to pass up.

“Someone approached our commander and he thought it was a great idea and he went with it,” said Bruce Hill.

The celebrity team featured well-known competitors such as former baseball players Frank Catalanotto and John Franco as well as ice hockey stars Rick DiPietro and Matt Martin. And the Fort Hamilton community stepped up to bat too — service members, their families, and even base staffers made up the home team.

The event marked the second time all-stars from WFAN and Fort Hamilton stepped up to the plate to play ball. The teams faced off last summer, when the gang of celebrities prevailed over Fort Hamilton’s softball team for the first time. It was the same outcome this year.

“They won the second time in a row,” Hill said. “They’re return and repeat champions.”
