Bases on bawls! Walks undo Cyclones in day game disaster

Scrappers 8
Cyclones 1

July 7 at Keyspan Park

As Frankie Frisch used to say, “Oh, those bases on balls!” — and he’d be rolling in his grave if he heard that Cyclone pitchers walked seven batters in a row in the fifth inning en route to a horrifying, depressing, demoralizing day-game loss on Monday.

Already down 2-0 after a Juan Valdes homer, the Cyclones watched as starter Jenrry Mejia walked the first three
Scrappers in the fifth, reliever Wendy Rosa walked the next batter, and then his his reliever, Jimmy Johnson, walked the next three men.

Finally, Roy Merritt ended the disaster, striking out his first batter and later bringing the disastrous inning to a close. Merritt went on to pitch three innings of no-hit ball, but the damage was already done.

The only Cyclone run came in the fourth on a Kirk Nieuwenhuis single. Nieuwenhuis was the only other bright spot on the day — he was 4-for-4.
