An RBI single by Vermont’s Jaycob Brugman was enough to beat the Cyclones whose bats were kept silent by Lake Monstrous pitching.
Both starting pitchers went deep into the game, keeping most batters off the bases. Clones’ starter Miller Diaz pitched six innings, striking out seven batters and allowing five hits. The lone run came in the sixth, when Ryan Huck doubled to deep center, made it to third on a flyout, and then Brugman proceeded to hit the RBI single to right field.
Vermont’s Lou Trivino pitched seven innings, allowing one hit each in the first five, but allowing only one runenr to advance past first base. Cyclones’ manager Rich Donnelly said the end result was simply a product of Vermont getting a timely hit.
“It’s really simple. They got a big two-out hit and we didn’t,” he said. “You can’t try to make something out of it that wasn’t there. You got to tip your hat to them.”
Gavin Cecchini was perfect from the plate, hitting four singles in as many at-bats in the loss. But Cecchini only made it past first base once and the Clones never threatened to score.
However, the good news for the Cyclones is Aberdeen succumbed to Connecticut, keeping the Clones two games out of first place and a playoff birth.
Brooklyn will play Vermont in the rubber match tonight at 5 pm.
