Cops from the 67th Precinct have started a new dance with East Flatbush club owners.
Official said that they are planning a sit down meeting with the owners to discuss noise complaints as well as to curb some of the violence that comes from these happening night spots.
For years, a good portion of assaults and shootings in East Flatbush have stemmed from club activity, officials said.
“We have an excellent relationship with club owners,” explained Deputy Inspector Corey Pegues, the commanding officer of the 67th Precinct. “It’s really not the clubs, it’s the patrons. But we have to still hold their feet to the fire so they make sure that they don’t allow somebody to come into their place with a weapon.”
Officials said that most of the club owners invited have had two or three incidents at their establishments.
“We’re not going to read them the riot act, but we want to let them know that we’ll be keeping an eye out for them,” Pegues said.
“We’re not going to tolerate anyone who gives us a problem,” he explained.
While shootings were reduced drastically in 2007, Pegues, who took over the 67th Precinct earlier this month, said that many of the shootings this year have been connected to either clubs or late night parties “in the wee hours.”
To combat the problem, Pegues has dispatched nearly all of the 12 new officers to late night shifts.
“We’ve had three or four shootings in the early ‘90s,” he said, referring to the East 90 blocks in the northeastern end of the command. “We want to maintain an omnipresence as the night goes on.”
Pegues added that the cops may also be used to check for drunk drivers when the clubs close for the night, he said.
NYPD CompStat statistics show that felony assaults in East Flatbush has risen by nearly four percent, from 205 in 2007 to 214 this year.
