You think writing Bay Ridge Nights is kids’ stuff? Well, this week it is! We’ve got a film and a musical play for the junior league, along with our traditional rock ’n’ roll for the grown-up contingent.
On Friday, take the family to see a criminal mastermind at work, when the Narrows Botanical Garden (Shore Road and 70th Street) screens the animated flick “Despicable Me,” which follows a supervillain and his crew of yellow minions in their quest to steal the moon. The garden is showing the flick for free — just be sure to bring your own seats and snacks. The evil scheme gets going at sundown, around 7:30 pm.
Meanwhile, Bay Ridge Prep (8101 Ridge Blvd. at 81st Street) will offer family-friendly live-action singing and dancing, with the musical “James and the Giant Peach,” based on Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s tale about an orphan boy and his adventures with giant insects. Hosted by the school in partnership with Jeff Samaha Theater Productions and the Ridge Chorale, the show will kick off at 7 pm on Friday. And if you miss James traveling the world in his dirigible stone fruit on Friday night, head to encore performances at 1 pm and 7 pm on Saturday and 1 pm and 6 pm on Sunday. Tickets are $10.
After the show on Saturday, put away childish things and head out for your weekly dose of adult activities — by which we mean booze and loud music! Local rockers Cherry Bomb will be blowing up the Greenhouse Cafe (7717 Third Ave. between 77th and 78th streets), with a 10 pm show dedicated to band member Sean Quinn’s “50th” birthday. We are not sure what those quotation marks mean, but the show will definitely feature plenty of oldies but goodies from bands like Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, and AC/DC.
And The Wicked Monk (9510 Third Ave. between 95th and 96th streets) will keep the party going even later Saturday night with cover rockers Love Tap. The high-energy band will start the show at 11 pm and continue well into the morning.
