A 30-year facility, “dedicated to educating individuals about the built and natural environments of New York City,” reaped the fruits of its labors when it celebrated the grand opening of its new “green” headquarters in Gowanus.
The Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment (BCUE) launched the base, a former doll factory at 168 7th Street, with a community grand opening, featuring a day of free activities and special attractions; among them, eco-friendly interactive guided tours, live music, a film screening and a recycling drive.
The green building spans 18,000 square feet across two floors and includes reclaimed wood flooring, efficient HVAC systems, zoned lighting and dual flush toilets.
Motion sensor faucets, bicycle storage, and photovoltaics that offset an undetermined amount of electrical consumption, complete the green features.
