Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, left, honored Midwood resident Aleksandr Ostrovskiy, a sixth-grader at IS 234, 1875 East 17th Street, who was crowned national chess champion after out-maneuvering more than 2,000 students at a tournament in Pittsburgh.
The Russian-born Ostrovskiy, 12, is no stranger to competition. He has represented the United States in the Pan-American Games in Ecuador, and was awarded the silver medal at the North American Youth Chess Championship.
