How come I don’t find it surprising that some Americans are more concerned with gun control than of terrorists? To prove my point look at all the flak Vice President nominee Sara Palin took over her membership in the National Rifle Association (NRA) and to further bolster the point, look at the flak our newly appointed Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is receiving. On Jan 27, Daily News columnist Michael Daly wrote on page 12 ‘Pro-gun Gill should see heartbreak at Brooklyn High School. “The Brooklyn High School attended by an honor student killed by a stray bullet wants our new pro-gun senator to drop by for a visit.” No one blames the shooter, however because Senator Gillibrand has taken an active stance against gun control, which is her right as an American she will constantly be targeted as a shoot happy Annie Oakley.
Although our constitution guarantees the right of Americans to bear arms; I find it appalling that if anyone is a member of the NRA they are treated with scorn from the media that will shower you with statistics over statistics showing why gun control is needed to curb wanton killing of our citizens. As though armed citizens are the culprits that are causing the nations crimes. Smarten up! Illegal guns by wanton criminals are the issue. Criminals don’t obey the law; they break the law without conscience and in many cases without reprisals.
Everyone except the criminals feel for the loss of any innocent life. I once got thrown off jury duty by a judge because he asked is there anyone on the jury who feels that citizens have the right to have a gun. I said I do. The judge than questioned me…why do feel that way, what prompts you to say that? I responded well if a person feel his life is being threatened he should be able to protect himself. “So you feel just because an individual feels threatened he should be allowed to carry a gun…then everyone should be able to carry a gun” said the Judge. I responded “Well at least it will even the odds… and whammo I was dismissed.”
I am not a member of the NRA nor do I own a gun, but I have always felt that citizens who go through the process of applying for gun permits have the right to bear arms. As long as they register them legally and follow the rules. I always remember the story that a fellow mailman related to me when I was working delivering mail. He owned a home in the Carnarsie area and in the middle of the night he heard an intruder on his porch. He went for his rifle that was duly registered and went down to his front door, when the intruder stepped inside his home, he blasted the intruder. The Police came and never pressed charges against the homeowner, because as soon as the armed intruder stepped into the house, he had the right to protect his property and the lives of is family.
To be continued.
Screech at you next week!
