This year, Bishop Kearney High School’s Sports Awards Dinner was a very special event, honoring winning teams and winning players. More than 300 parents, coaches and members of Kearney’s administration gathered at the Rex Manor, 1100 60th Street, to congratulate all those who had taken part in the year’s activities.
Highlights of Kearney’s year in sports included the soccer team finishing the season as Brooklyn champs; the varsity volleyball team having their 13th consecutive year of undefeated play in the regular league season; the junior varsity volleyball team finishing the season as Brooklyn champs; the junior varsity basketball team winning the Reebok Holiday Jam Fest and the track team becoming the varsity and freshmen Brooklyn/Queens Cross Country Champs.
The National Consortium for Academics and Sports honored 27 Kearney students for their excellence in academics and athletics, as well as having made significant contributions to their schools and communities. These girls received certificates to acknowledge all they do during the school day and after school.
The honorees included Allison Behette (varsity basketball); Stephanie Bramante (JV softball); Margaret Brunton (swimming); Bridget Dalton (golf); Nicole DeTorre (cheerleading); Nicole Diakoumakos (golf); Deana DiBrienza (JV softball); Kaitlin Durney (JV basketball); Joanna Emilio (varsity softball); Jacqueline Fagoni (tennis); Elana Garcia (cheerleading); Joanna Gavin (soccer); Jaclyn Grasso (JV basketball); Deirdre Hynes (tennis); Michelle Kenel (varsity basketball); Shannon Mackay (JV volleyball); Katie Mason (soccer); Claire Nolan (tennis); Doaa Shalabi (swimming) Erin Tacopina (JV volleyball) and Erin Tierney (varsity basketball).
The “Athletic Director’s Awards for Outstanding Service” to their team were presented to Veronica Bascinelli, Allison Behette, Annie Brown, Brianna Carroll, Bridget Dalton, Nicole Diakoumakos, Katherine Doyle, Kaitlin Durney, Chelsea Dwyer, Danielle Farragher, Caitlyn Furlong, Mary Gallagher, Jaclyn Grasso, Katherine Griffin, Christina Hiltunen, Dana Iannicelli, Caitlin Irwin, Kristina Iudica, Michelle Kenel, Kerry King, Norah Marley, Kim Matthews, Stefanie Mule, Tara Mullen, Allison Nunziata, Taylor Raccuglia, Samantha Retas, Danielle Romano, Adrianna Rumayor, Gabrielle Sabatino, Victoria Spinelli, Erin Tacopina, Molly Tacopina and Erin Tierney.
Athletic Director Anthony Troiano took time out during the evening to acknowledge the generous support he had received from the coaches of Kearney’s athletic teams, and he presented them with a plaque commemorating their accomplishments during the year.
Four awards that are presented at the dinner are named for people who have made a significant contribution to the Kearney community over the years.
The Sister Geraldine Woods Award for Outstanding Christian Leadership in Athletics was presented to Kerry King. The “Erin Quinlan Memorial Award for Outstanding Kearney Spirit in Athletics” was presented to Norah Marley. The “Thomas Gannon Memorial Award for Scholarship, Athletic Ability and School Spirit” was awarded to Kimberly Matthews.
The “Theresa Witty Award – Kearney’s #1 Fan Award,” for outstanding support of Kearney’s student-athletes and the athletic program was given to soccer coach Charlie Candela and the Bishop Kearney 2007-2008 “Athlete of the Year Award” went to Megan Fitzpatrick.
Tara Mullen and Katherine Griffin received the “US Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete” awards this year for excelling in academics as well as a number of varsity sports. Griffin was also selected as Kearney’s representative to National Student Athlete Day for excelling in academics, athletics and student leadership.
