The Brooklyn Bar Association, in conjunction with the Brooklyn Bar Association Foundation, Inc., the Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyer’s Project, Inc., and the Brooklyn Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service, announce a new series of educational programs for the public.
The first program, “Foreclosure: A Primer for the Public,” will be held October 27 from 6-8 p.m. in the Brooklyn Bar Association’s meeting hall, 123 Remsen Street in Brooklyn Heights.
All members of the public concerned with the foreclosure crisis in Brooklyn are invited to attend. Reservations are recommended.
As of press time, “Foreclosure: A Primer for the Public” is scheduled to feature a panel of experts reflecting various perspectives on foreclosure, including:
· Assemblyman Darryl Towns will speak about his successful legislative initiative, which resulted in a 90-day grace period for victims of foreclosure;
· Adam Gross, Esq., managing attorney at the Law Offices of Steven J. Baum, PC, will speak on the nature of foreclosure proceedings;
· Brooklyn Bar Association Past President David J. Doyaga, Sr., Esq. will speak on the interplay between bankruptcy and foreclosure;
· Navid Vazire, Esq., from the South Brooklyn Legal Services Foreclosure Prevention Project, will speak on foreclosure fraud and mortgage scams; and
· Brooklyn Bar Association member Yolande I. Nicholson, Esq., from Sellers Realty Group, will speak on short sales and loan workouts.
Efforts are also being made to secure a speaker from Freddie Mac to add insights on loan loss mitigation. The program is being organized, and will be moderated by Brooklyn Bar Association Trustee Richard A. Klass, Esq.
Brooklyn Bar Association president, Diana J. Szochet, Esq., is “deeply committed” to “doing the public good.” The upcoming public education series is Szochet’s “cornerstone initiative.”
Future programs contemplated in this series include “How Protected Are Your Assets?” in December 2008 or early January 2009; “Dealing with Debt: A Primer for Consumers” in February 2009; an Elder Law or Family Law program in April 2009; and “Patients’ Rights/Patients’ Responsibilities” in June 2009.
