A deer in the middle of Metrotech?
Well, yes and no. If you’ve passed by the downtown office complex
recently, you probably did a double take at the sight of a darting,
life-sized deer – albeit one encrusted in rhinestones.
The sculpture by Greenpoint artist Marc Swanson, "Fits and
Starts," is just one of several that will be installed at
Metrotech Commons by Sept. 29 as part of the Public Art Fund’s
"Semiprecious" exhibition of contemporary art made
of dazzling materials.
Luis Gispert’s sculpture, "Laid Back in the Cut," is
comprised of three chrome-plated bronze boom boxes that double
as a bench – a monument to the nearby Fulton Mall. (The multi-talented
artist received attention recently for his photographs, exhibited
as part of the "Open House: Working in Brooklyn" show
at the Brooklyn Museum.)
"Semiprecious" opens Sept. 29 with a reception from
5 to 6 pm at the Metrotech Commons (located between Jay Street
and Flatbush Avenue at Johnson Street in Downtown Brooklyn).
Viewing hours for outdoor works are dawn to dusk; Carolyn Castano’s
"Nightbird (A Memory of Things Lost and Found Again),"
a bejeweled peacock with a closed tail covered in gems, crystal
brooches and cameos, can be viewed in the lobby of 1 Metrotech,
Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 6 pm.
