Members of Community Board 14 toasted supporters and welcomed their new compatriots at an end-of-season party.
The June gathering, a tradition for the board, provided an opportunity to say thank you to a wide range of people.
“The purpose of the gathering,” noted Alvin Berk, the board’s chair, “is to welcome each other as friends. We are very grateful for your friendship. The community board could not exist without your support.”
As a body of volunteer members with only limited power, the board, said Berk, relies upon the community to give it clout. “Our influence over city government is a function of the support we get from you,” he told the assembled gathering. “We try very hard to be the conduit through which you express your views.”
This year, those who received awards at the festive occasion, held at the board office, 810 East 16th Street, included four members of the city’s Department of Sanitation (DOS) and six members of the New York Police Department (NYPD).
Awardees were Chaim Deutsch, the founder of Flatbush Shomrim; Jack Katz, the executive director of the Flatbush Avenue Business Improvement District; Jeremy Neiman, an intern in the board office; Claudette Workman, an official with the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT); Superintendent James Proscia, and Supervisors Michael Pergola, Kevin Tock and John Vlacich of DOS; and Lt. Jacqueline Bourne, Sergeants Eric Chappelle and Edward Kramer, Detective Dominick Scotto and P.O.s Jovita Richardson and Leonard Wright from the 70th Precinct.
In addition, new CB 14 members Mirvlyne Brice, Muhammad Nasir, Mohammed Razvi, Sarina Roffe, Ernest Skinner and Glenn Wolin were acknowledged.
