A handcuffed corpse surfaced in the harbor near Ikea in Red Hook on Monday morning, police said.
Police received a call about the body in the water at 9:37 am and officers in boats responded to Erie Basin, the cove created by the industrial peninsulas at the ends of Van Brunt and Columbia streets. The body was retrieved near the end of Columbia Street and turned out to be handcuffed in the front and wearing a shackle on the left leg, officers said.
The body was fully clothed, according to a police spokesman who described it as “not badly decomposed.”
A police investigation is underway, officers said.
