Young scribes and poets helped provide odes of ethnic pride when Borough Hall hosted a salute to the Land of Milk and Honey, in conjunction with the Brooklyn Jewish Heritage Committee.

The annual tribute lauded winners of an essay, poetry and playwriting contest for local high school and yeshiva students during a ceremonial program, which also featured an awards presentation for local notables.

Those honorees were: Justice Bruce M. Balter, Brooklyn Supreme Court; Olga Lipschitz, CEO, Cobble Hill Health Center; Ella J. Weiss, president, Brooklyn Arts Council; Michael Weiss, executive director, MetroTech Business Improvement District; and Esther Lustig, executive director, Human Care Services for Families and Children.

The student winners included: Abigail Gomez, Abigail Garcia, Irene Politis and Mamuna Faizi, New Utrecht High School, 1601 80th Street; Stan Shamayev, Leon Goldstein High School for the Sciences, 1830 Shore Boulevard; Renee Haliburton, Brooklyn Democracy Academy, 985 Rockaway Avenue; and Devory Borlam, Shulamith High School for Girls, 1277 East 14th St.
