I’m glad to hear it. But what about you, Mr. President, not thinking through your consequences?
In 2007, before President Barack Hussein Obama sat in the Oval Office, he declared, while on campaign in Texas, “While we’re at it we’re going to close Guantanamo. And we’re going to restore habeas corpus. … We’re going to lead by example — by not just word but by deed. That’s our vision for the future.”
As defined in the New Oxford American Dictionary (availalbe on my editor’s Mac — I have a lowly PC), habeas corpus is Latin for ‘you shall have the body (in court).’ As far as Gitmo goes, it refers to a legal action by means of which detainees can seek relief from unlawful imprisonment.
Did he really believe the detainees at Guantanamo Bay were unlawfully detained?
On May 29, a Washington Post article by Peter Finn revealed that the “final report by the Guantanamo Review Task Force recommends that 126 of the detainees be transferred either to their homes or to a third country; that 36 be prosecuted in either federal court or a military commission; and that 48 be held indefinitely under the laws of war.”
It further stated that the “report was completed in January but sent to select committees on Capitol Hill just this week. The administration sat on the report in the wake of the attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day because there was little public or congressional appetite for further discussion of its plan to close the military detention center.”
How convenient for the administration to let it out now, right before Memorial Day weekend, when we were all busy worrying about what hot dogs to eat, how much sun to take, what BBQ to go to, and, in light of a national disaster of oil uncontrollably spewing out in the Gulf.
Further along, the Post’s article states, “in a letter this month, seven Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee asked James L. Jones, the president’s national security adviser, to recommend to Obama “an immediate prohibition on the transfer of any detainee out of Guantanamo Bay, and a halt to any action related to the closure of the facility.”
Mr. Obama is “furious” at BP? Hell, join the club. We New Yorkers are really, really furious with Mr. Obama.
Did he carefully think about his actions when he declared, “We’re going to close Guantanamo” without really knowing what he was talking about? Is he worried about us now, the people of New York City, by wanting to hold the terror trials here?
Not for nuthin,™ Mr. President, but your actions and your failureto declare “before thinking of the consequences” has put every New Yorker in peril.
Hold the trials somewhere else, like maybe Guantanamo Bay. It’s convenient, it’s still open, they’re already there, and you can’t beat the weather.
That’s my vision for the future.
