In the year and a half he’s been serving at Bay Ridge’s 68th Precinct, Sergeant Christopher McGibbon has been involved in almost every major crime — and major arrest — to hit the area.
It’s no wonder, then, that his successes at crimefighting are being noticed by the “man upstairs” — Chief Joseph Fox, the commanding officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South.
Brooklyn South’s top cop honored Sgt. McGibbon as Brooklyn South “Cop of the Month” during a short but poignant ceremony at Patrol Borough Brooklyn South Headquarters in East Flatbush.
McGibbon’s wife Lynda and parents Janet and Edward were on hand for the special ceremony at the chief’s office.
Also on hand was Deputy Inspector Eric Rodriguez, the commanding officer of the 68th Precinct, who sang the praises of the always active, always dedicated crime fighter.
Rodriguez said that since joining the 68th Precinct, McGibbon has been part of the precinct’s elite Anti-Crime Unit. McGibbon leads a team of plain clothes police officers who spend their days looking for the worst of the worst.
“McGibbon’s a dream for any commanding officer,” said Rodriguez. “He’s a very well rounded sergeant and really cares about the community and the job.”
Rodriguez said that McGibbon and his team usually work a day tour, but he and his officers aren’t shy about putting in the extra hours when there’s a manhunt.
He and his team were instrumental in the apprehension for a man who committed a rape in Bay Ridge last week. The suspect was ultimately apprehended in a local park.
His team was also credited with arresting a serial burglar hunting for valuables throughout Dyker Heights — a case where McGibbon showed that he was more interested in catching criminals than doing his forty hours.
“His team does anything we ask them,” said Rodriguez. “They were working day tours and when we learned that the burglar was working nights, he started putting in the extra hours. Any problem we have, he addresses it.”
Rodriguez said that McGibbon and his team have helped the precinct see a 22 percent drop in crime this year and a 25 percent crime fall over the last two years.
