Borough President Antonio Reynoso is celebrating Brooklyn’s rap scene. The beep on Friday declared Aug. 16 “Maino Day,” in honor of homegrown rapper and community activist Jermaine “Maino” Coleman.
Reynoso presented Coleman with the proclamation at Brooklyn Borough Hall, where he recognized the artist’s service and influence.
“Hip-hop is more than a genre — it’s a way of healing, growing, and giving back to the neighborhoods that made us,” Reynoso said in a statement. “All over Brooklyn and beyond, Maino is recognized as an inspiration because he proves the power of hip-hop to bring us together through good times and bad.”
Coleman made his mark on history with hip hop hits like “Hi Hater” and through youth development initiatives. With that in mind, Reynoso also announced a Day of Service for Youth which aims to encourage Brooklyn youth to invest in their community through public service.
“Maino Day will serve as a celebration of his legacy and a reminder to Brooklynites to never give up and never forget to spread love,” Reynoso said.
Maino still makes music — he recently released a song with Atlanta rapper Young Thug, and often speaks on podcasts and radio stations. He celebrated the beeps’s proclamation alongside fans and family.
A spokesperson for Reynoso’s office said the rapper requested Aug. 16, his mother’s birthday, to be Maino Day as a way to concurrently honor her.
