“What do you do for recreation?” asks Maude Lebowski in an early scene of the movie, “The Big Lebowski.”
The Dude answers, “Oh, the usual. I bowl. Drive around. The occasional acid flashback.”
He may as well have added participating in the 8th Annual Lebowski Fest, a nationwide festival that celebrates all aspects of the Cohen Brothers’ groundbreaking comedy.
On September 24, Lebowski Fest stopped in Williamsburg at Brooklyn Bowl (61 Wythe Avenue) for a night of bowling, trivia contests, and costume pageantry.
The costume contest was easily the highlight of the night, featuring many of the characters who appear in the movie, including several Maudes and Nihilists, Jackie Treehorn, Jeffrey Lebowski, Brandt, Saddam Hussein, and three guys wearing the same Persian rug. There were no Donnys.
Brooklyn resident Gabriel Miller-Phillips, one of two people dressed like Jesus Quintana, said that he enjoyed the event and looked forward to rolling a few frames with his bowling ball.
