The flavor of a new drink celebrating a minor league baseball team does not taste like chewing tobacco, salty sea air or even freshly-cut grass.
The newly unveiled Brooklyn Cyclone Slurpee wisely avoids a literal interpretation: it tastes like berries.
The drink made its debut last week at a 7-Eleven on 20th Avenue in Bensonhurst.
“It’s very refreshing,” said local resident Ron Caruso, on hand for the drink’s August 1 introduction.
Caruso and other customers were joined by Brooklyn Cyclone pitchers Eric Turgeon and Chris Schwinden, shortstop Reese Havens, and mascot Sandy the Seagull.
Caruso, a lifelong Bensonhurst resident, said he is a diehard Cyclones fan—but also a Yankees fan.
“But I’m a Brooklyn guy, so I support Brooklyn teams,” he said.
The first hundred people purchasing the drink received two free tickets to watch the Cyclones, a Class-A affiliate of the New York Mets, play at KeySpan Park in Coney Island.
Local residents Anna Nieves and her granddaughter Tiana Mercado were among those to receive free tickets—and enjoy the Slurpee.
“We were thirsty,” Nieves said. “It was like a splash of berries.”
There’s a reason for that.
The drink is a mix of Mountain Dew Blue Shock with berry citrus flavor.
The company did not disclose the drink’s exact proportion of ingredients.
It comes in a limited edition collectible 32-ounce cup, emblazoned with an image of a Cyclones player.
Cyclones General Manager Steve Cohen said his squad is thrilled with this partnership.
“The Cyclones and 7-Eleven are both neighborhood institutions, and this partnership gives us the chance to combine our efforts, and extend our reach throughout the Brooklyn community,” Cohen said.
“It also gives fans a cool new way to enjoy the summer’s best drink, while rooting for their favorite team,” Cohen added.
The Brooklyn Cyclones Slurpee will be available at 7-Eleven stores in the five boroughs though September.
