Brooklyn martial artists took three gold medals and four silver medals during the 2008 Wong Fei Hung Northeastern All Kung Fu Championships, an annual tournament, which celebrates Chinese martial arts (known as “kung fu”) and attracts martial artists from all over the country.
The six-member team from the Brooklyn Branch of Yee’s Hung Ga International Kung Fu Association and its affiliate, the Brooklyn Kung Fu & Tai Chi Academy, was led by Kung Fu Master Peter Berman Yee and Tai Chi Master Tzyann Hsu at the tournament held in St. Peter’s College, Jersey City, New Jersey. Berman and Hsu are long-time Park Slope residents and have taught Kung Fu and Tai Chi in Park Slope for over 15 years.
Winners from Saturday’s tournament include:
Frank Aline: Gold medal in Open Forms, Silver medal in Advanced Men’s Southern Long Hand (performing Hung Ga Kung Fu Five Animals Fist).
Jane Chou: Silver medal in Advanced Internal Weapons (performing Tai Chi sword).
Sandy Hom: Gold medal in Intermediate Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan and Silver medal in Intermediate Internal Weapons (performing Tai Chi sword).
Yoko Hyun: Gold medal in Beginner Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan.
Gennady Palitsky: Silver medal in Beginner Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan.
The Brooklyn Branch of Yee’s Hung Ga opened its doors in 1992 and is one of the oldest martial arts schools in Park Slope/Windsor Terrace. It is located at Eight Windsor Place, just off Seventh Avenue near 16th Street, where it offers classes in Hung Ga Kung Fu and Tai Chi Chuan for children and adults of all ages and fitness levels.
