Brooklyn Philharmonic is joined by Complexions Contemporary Ballet and its Co-Artistic Directors Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson to choreograph Stravinsky’s ballet, “Pulcinella,” bringing a modern, multicultural spin to the work.
The performance is May 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, in the Peter Jay Sharp Building 30 Lafayette Avenue, in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn.
“For Good Measure,” a post-show discussion hosted by Evans Mirageas, immediately following the concert and is free for ticket holders.
For Complexions’ version of “Pulcinella,” choreographer Rhoden will draw inspiration from Stravinsky’s tale by bringing the essence of the story forward without adhering strictly to its narrative structure. The themes of love, jealousy, and staged behavior present in “Pulcinella” will be placed in the context of the current issues of our modern age such as, half truths, tabloid behavior, and sensationalism. Rhoden seeks to update the ballet in the same way Stravinsky took music from the past and gave it his own twist.
Guest conductor Scott Yoo will lead Brooklyn Philharmonic in the performance of Stravinsky’s “Commedia dell’arte” ballet. The “Commedia dell’arte” theme continues with “Zerbinetta’s Aria” from Ariadne auf Naxos by Strauss and “The Comedians, Suite for Small Orchestra” by Kabalevsky round out the program.
Complexions will open the evening with a performance of their piece Hissy Fits, danced to chamber works of Bach. “Hissy Fits” is choreographer Dwight Rhoden’s examination of relationships and the short emotional outbursts that occur between couples, how quickly they can happen and how they can be resolved.
