Brooklyn’s party animals usher in 2012 with a bang at Grand Army Plaza!

Brooklyn’s New Year’s Eve revelers stayed clear of Times Square and Ryan Seacrest (yawn) at the stroke of midnight on Saturday, preferring to have their ball in balmy Brooklyn while greeting 2012 with a bang.

Thrill seekers packed Grand Army Plaza near Prospect Park, a snapper’s toss away from luminescent Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Arch, where they welcomed the new year with fireworks, showering the pyrotechnic pageant — an eye-popping holiday gift from Borough Hall and the Prospect Park Alliance — with a cloudburst of “oohs” and “aahs.”

Revelers in their party best shed a glow far into the sparkling yonder and rocked the decibel level with the night’s most coveted bauble — a noisemaker — while Borough President Markowitz and Alliance President and Prospect Park Administrator Emily Lloyd tried their best to fuel the din from the podium.

Excited children counted down the minutes and seconds, bouncing like balls between the human ribbon of merrymakers. When the clock finally struck midnight, 10-year-old Jada DeLeon of Flatbush was ready to make a spectacle of herself!

“Wow!” she screamed, waving her arms and tipping her hot pink “2012” goggles upwards as the inky sky erupted in a cavalcade of color.

A rollicking fireworks display — complete with free hot chocolate and live music by Rock ‘N’ Soul Experience — was the only way to send the old year packing for some.

“I’ve had an explosive 2011, and I’m hoping that this will wipe my slate clean for 2012!” said Canarsie visitor Roberta Booth.

Oh, and if the world does go up in smoke in 2012, Brooklyn’s party animals can always say that they were there to celebrate the beginning of the end!
