Bugged on Second St.

To The Editor:

I have a major mosquito problem in my backyard, which is on Second Street between 6th and 7th avenues.

In 40 years of living in Park Slope, I never experienced anything like it. The mosquitoes are small, and very aggressive.

I posted a query about this problem to my block association neighbors, and promptly received nine responses, saying people could not use their backyards, had to use insect repellant to sit outside, or just did not go outside.

One neighbor said friends on Carroll Street had the same problem.

I went to a party yesterday and met a couple from 2nd Street between 7th and 8th avenues, who reported the same problem.

We have asked neighbors to check for standing water, a breeding hazard.

There are two inaccessible abandoned houses, one on 2nd Street, between 6th and 7th avenues, one on 3rd Street, right off 7th Avenue, which may have water traps in their backyards.

We have contacted the community board and called 311. So far we’ve had no response, and we still have a mosquito festival.

They are obviously a health hazard (West Nile virus, etc.) as well as a nuisance.

We probably need a neighborhood-wide attack on mosquitoes, which should include vigilance against standing water.
