The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and its Real Estate & Development Committee announced the winning projects for its 2009 Building Brooklyn Awards. The largest annual real estate industry event in the borough, the Building Brooklyn Awards (BBA) recognizes recently completed construction and renovation projects that enrich Brooklyn’s neighborhoods and economy.
The 9th Annual Building Brooklyn Awards ceremony and cocktail reception will be held July 15 at Stage 6, Steiner Studios in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
The 2009 judging committee, an independent panel of architects, developers, planners, government officials, economic development experts and business leaders, selected twelve winning projects — small and large, residential and commercial – from a slate of nominated submissions representing the entire borough.
Along with the traditional award categories such as “Mixed Used Property,” “Affordable Housing,” “Arts & Culture” and “Landscape and Open Space” there is the introduction of a new award for “Energy Conservation,” presented by National Grid. Although past winners have been recognized for incorporating environmentally friendly technologies and materials into their projects, this year marks the first time such a designation will be included as part of the award line−up.
The 12 winning projects to be recognized at the 2009 Building Brooklyn Awards are Galapagos Arts Space – Arts and Culture, DUMBO; Brooklyn Children’s Museum – Institutional Building, Crown Heights; 221 McKibbin Street Industrial Center – Historic Preservation, East Williamsburg; The Block Building – Industrial Building, Greenpoint; Brooklyn Bridge Pedestrian Improvements – Landscape and Open Space, DUMBO; NYPD Tow Pound Operations – Office Building, Brooklyn Navy Yard; Morris Manor – Affordable Housing, Flatbush; Carroll Gardens Row House – Residential: One to Four Family, Carroll Gardens; One Prospect Park – Residential: Multiple Dwelling, Prospect Heights; Atlantic Gardens – Mixed Use Property, Boerum Hill; Triangle Junction Mall – Economic Development, Flatbush; and The Perry Building – National Grid Award for Energy Conservation, Brooklyn Navy Yard.
In addition to recognizing construction projects, BBA honors individuals who have made significant contributions toward enhancing the business conditions and economic climate of Brooklyn. This year’s Building Brooklyn Awards honorees are renowned architect Richard Meier, FAIA of Richard Meier & Partners Architects, LLP and Joanne M. Oplustil, executive director of CAMBA.
