Burglary dip
It must be too hot to burgle.
With the summer upon us, more windows are being opened in Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and Red Hook, yet fewer thieves are crawling through them, according to NYPD statistics, which show that burglaries in the 76th Precinct were halved over the past month.
Police said that between early July and Aug. 9, five burglaries were reported to area cops. During the same time period last year, 12 burglaries had been reported, statistics show.
But while it may be too hot to creep through windows, it’s cool enough to hold someone up: the number of robberies remained the same at eight.
It’s also cool enough to break into cars — grand larcenies, which include cases of identity theft as well as car break-ins, jumped over the last month from 13 in 2008 to 23 this year.
Car thefts, meanwhile, dropped from six to three, statistics show.
Laptop looting
A rooftop rover could be responsible for breaking into a Richards Street factory overnight on Aug. 1 when two laptop computers were stolen.
Workers at Perch Design, located near Coffey Street, told police that the computers were discovered missing when they opened up for work at 8:30 am on Aug. 2.
Employees said that they didn’t know just how the thief got into the building until they realized that two doors leading to the roof had not been secured.
About $1,100 worth of computer equipment was stolen.
Gunfire rocks area
Red Hook’s balmy summer nights were shattered by the sound of gunfire recently during two separate shootings that cops are still investigating.
Police said that a man hobbled into Long Island College Hospital at 9 pm on Aug. 1 claiming that he had been shot in the ankle on his way to his aunt’s home.
The victim admitted that he didn’t know exactly where he was when he was shot, although he said he was near a chicken restaurant.
On July 28, a 23-year-old man was shot in the leg as he stood in front of a building on Richards Street between King and Walcott Streets.
The victim said that he was hanging out on the block just before 10:30 pm when the gunman approached and opened fire.
Police said it was unclear what sparked the shooting.
Anyone with information regarding either bullet barrage is urged to contact either the 76th Precinct at (718) 834-3211 or (800) 577-TIPS. Police say that all calls are kept confidential.
Popped for $10
Two men mugged a 36-year-old early on July 31 near the corner of Hoyt and President streets.
The victim told police that the attack occurred following a night of revelry that began at a bar on Fourth Avenue and ended at a Smith Street diner and a farewell to his pals at Congress Street at around 5 am.
About 10 minutes later, the victim was grabbed from behind, knocked to the ground and mugged — all for $10.
