Bullets over Washington Avenue

A criminal shot a man at the corner of Washington Avenue and St. Johns Place at 9:40 am on Tuesday — and cops and residents think the gunfire was drug-related.

The shooter ran out of the Deli Cup bodega, shot a 40-year-old man in the leg, then ran north on Washington Avenue as a crowd gathered, according to a witness, who posted some details on the Web site, Gothamist.

Police are still looking for the shooter, but the gunplay didn’t faze neighbors.

“A shooting doesn’t worry me,” said Anna Coit, who lives on nearby Lincoln Place. “I’ve lived here 40-some years. I feel safe here.”

One man standing on a nearby corner speculated that the crime wasn’t random.

“I don’t think it’s a drug thing,” he said. “It’s an ego thing between drug dealers.”

A clerk at a convience store across the street offered a solution.

“The police should question every ‘hang-out person,’” the man said angrily. “Ask them are you working, are you in school? If not, put them in the Army.”
