Squash pro joins the team at the Eastern Athletic gym

It’s a sports club that is more like an indoor country club.

That’s the only way to think about the impending arrival of international squash pro Farid Khan, who will be joining the Eastern Athletic staff on Sept. 1, and will be giving lessons to both adults and kids.

Khan’s arrival is just one part of the Eastern story: The club’s three centers — at the St. George Hotel in Brooklyn Heights; the Brooklyn Marriott in Downtown Brooklyn; and Grand Army Plaza in Park Slope — offer so much, that you have to explore them to believe it.

Eastern Athletic is not your typical gym. In Brooklyn Heights, for example, a 75,000-square-foot workout space includes a swimming pool, spas, squash and racquetball courts as well as all of the standard gym equipment and weights.

Plus, Eastern Athletic boasts a special program for kids. The Junior Academy offers fencing, karate, gymnastics, tumbling, ballet, soccer and tennis, among many other activities for youngsters of all ages. Eastern Athletic is proud to say that this program differentiates it from all other health clubs, making it a unique part of the Brownstone Brooklyn community.

Additional conveniences include childcare, personal training and swimming lessons. Eastern strives to make your health club experience as simple as possible.

Don’t wait to become a member any longer, because if you sign up before Aug. 25 you will receive 90 percent off of the initiation fee plus four free personal training sessions!

Union Temple’s open house

Union Temple, at Grand Army Plaza, is an egalitarian, inclusive, Reform temple. And it wants you.

This diverse Brooklyn community, led by Rabbi Linda Henry Goodman, is filled with thoughtful, compassionate people who are dedicated to tikun olam, repairing the world through the pursuit of social justice and active participation in the larger Jewish community.

To introduce new members into the Union Temple community, the synagogue is hosting an open house from 6 to 9 pm on Friday, Sept. 12. Also starting that evening is Synaplex programming, a multi-layered Shabbat experience for Brooklynites of all ages and interests.

Union Temple hosts many adult-education programs. On Oct. 19, there will be a salon program for the sisterhood and a movie for the brotherhood. Union Temple is also home to a very active religious school for children.

The Temple takes part in many social programs such as collecting food and clothing, and raising awareness about environment issues. Most of its programs begin the middle of October, after the High Holidays.
