After more than a century serving Carroll Gardens, Caputo’s Bake Shop closed its doors on Tuesday, marking the end of a family-run business that spanned five generations.
Owner James Caputo announced the closure in a sign posted on the storefront, delivering the news directly to the neighborhood that had long supported the bakery.
“It is with immense sadness that I am writing to tell you that the flame in our oven has been lit for the last time, and Caputo Bakery has come to the end of its 124-year life,” he wrote, adding that his family is “deeply grateful” for the trust customers put into the business.

“For five generations, my family has taken pride in serving this community, and it is with a heavy heart that I have made this difficult decision. We are deeply grateful for the trust you placed in us, the stories you shared, and the generations who have walked through our doors,” he said. “I am also profoundly grateful to the many dedicated employees who have been part of Caputo Bakery over the years. Their hard work and commitment have made all this possible.”
News of the closure quickly spread on Facebook, where former customers shared memories of the bakery’s role in their lives since its founding in 1904 — from early morning pastry runs to wedding cakes that became part of family milestones.
Though the bakery has shuttered, Caputo’s Fine Foods on Court Street remains open and operating, offering a continued presence of the Caputo name in the neighborhood.
Caputo ended the letter with a message of gratitude: “Thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives.”
