CB 14 gearing up for spring youth conference

For the third year in a row, teens in central Brooklyn will be able to network with prospective employers as well as with professionals who can help them hone their job-seeking skills at a youth conference organized by Community Board 14.

The conference is scheduled to be held on April 29th, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Brooklyn College student center, East 27th Street and Campus Road.

This year’s event is going to be bigger and better than ever, predicted Neil Brier, co-chairperson of the board’s Youth Services Committee, during the board’s March meeting. Prior conferences have each drawn about 200 teens.

“Probably over 30 organizations will be represented,” Brier told board members gathered in the cafeteria at Edward R. Murrow High School, 1600 Avenue L.

“As good as the last two were, I really think we are building on the volunteerism,” he went on, stressing, “This is something we at the community board can do that really makes a difference in kids’ lives.”

The event is targeted at teens and adolescents, age 12 to 19, to help them prepare for and find jobs, as well as internship and volunteering opportunities. In previous years, those who attended were able to speak with representatives of companies and organizations that are hiring or offering internship opportunities, as well as attend workshops on resume writing, and participate in mock interviews.

In addition, committee Co-chairperson Beverley Kilpatrick had noted at the board’s previous meeting, “If you need to know how to start a business, that will be there too.”

“Those of you who attended it in the past saw a remarkable thing,” added Alvin Berk, the board’s chairperson, during the February meeting. “It was extremely well attended by young people who got something out of it.”
