Cell Phones for Soldiers and Century 21 Real Estate are kicking off their cell phone collection drive.
Donated phones may be dropped off at the Century 21 offices located at 6317 Avenue N, in the Mill Basin sectionof Brooklyn, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Phones may be dropped off and donation receipts given upon request.
The organization of Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by Massachusetts teens Robbie and Britany Berquist with $21 dollars of their own money. Since inception the non-profit organization has raised almost $1 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 pre-paid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.
The donated phones are sold to ReCellular, which pays for each phone enough to provide an hour of talk time to soldiers abroad.
Approximately half of the donated phones are reconditioned and resold to wholesale companies in over 40 countries around the world. The ones not able to be refurbished are dismantled and recycled for their materials.
