The Summit Academy Charter School may have found a new home.
Summit currently shares space at P.S. 27, located at 27 Huntington Street. The charter school is searching for a new location and considering the building at 255 Butler Street.
“We are exploring outside venues for permanent housing and that location is one of our findings from an exploratory search via our board [of directors],” explained Summit Principal Shahara Jackson.
As of this writing, Community Board 6’s Landmarks and Land Use Committee was preparing to host a public hearing about a requested special permit for the site, which would maintain retail space on the first floor.
A special permit is necessary to legally allow the landlord to “do business” with Summit, which is a public school, Jackson said.
The city Department of Education (DOE) said it’s too early to determine how much the site would cost.
Jackson said Summit’s teachers and students would be excited “to have our own space.”
But that doesn’t mean they’re unhappy at P.S. 27, which also houses P.S. 676, the Red Hook Neighborhood School.
“We are probably an anomaly in the sense that the shared space that we occupy has been a blessing for us,” Jackson said. “Our building council is very functional. P.S. 27 has been a pretty good deal for us.”
Summit now offers grade six but will eventually expand to grades six to 12. The school will remain at P.S. 27 until June 2011.
