The borough’s portfolio of hotel’s got fatter last week, with the opening of Nu Hotel, in Boerum Hill.
The Nu Hotel showcases a design approach intended to maximize space, light and air, according to owner and operator Hersha Hospitality Management.
“Whimsical references such as stenciled quotes from famous Brooklynites, ‘found objects’ from local landmarks and other daring local art strive to echo the authentic, confident character of Brooklyn,” according to the company.
The 93-room hotel is located at 85 Smith Street.
Last year, Hersha acquired the hotel portion of the 13-story, 50-unit condominium developed by Boymelgreen Developers.
Rooms start at $200, and some feature a “cozy bed niche” with leather surroundings, a sitting area and custom hammocks that “evoke ultimate relaxation,” Hersha said.
The hotel features a bar/restaurant and a 24-hour gym. Company officials said their hotel reflects a commitment to eco-friendly living, with features such as cork flooring, organic bedding materials and custom furnishings crafted from sustainability harvested teak appearing in rooms.
But not everyone is cheering the borough’s latest boutique hotel.
City Councilmember Bill de Blasio has been a critic of the sudden abundance of hotels in Gowanus — where seven have opened already—and surrounding neighborhoods.
“Throughout our district, hotels continue to pop up left and right, with little discussion as to how they will affect the community,” the lawmaker’s communications director Jean Weinberg said.
“We put such effort into preserving the quality and character of our neighborhoods, yet these hotels are often out of context with surrounding buildings,” she added. “Hotels are also particularly disruptive due to their 24/7 nature and can negatively impact the quality of life for neighborhood residents.”
