The Fort Hamilton High School Cheerleaders, along with other cheerleading teams from the Tri-State area, returned from the 60 year-old National Cheerleaders Association summer camp, founded by L.R. Herkimer.
Held at Rutger’s University, the association selects award winners at each of the more than 1,000 camps it administers around the world each summer. It also holds events for 150,000 cheerleaders and dancers around the world annually.
The Fort Hamilton High School Cheerleaders, under the direction of coaches Kerri Caputo and Jennifer Sorenson, received the following awards at summer camp:
· Spirit Sticks (four separate), presented to Fort Hamilton for their team showing the most sincere spirit and enthusiasm for the day, taking into account being on time, cooperation, relationships with other teams, and leadership.
· The NCA Spirit Award, presented to the squad most admired by the other teams at camp. Each team casts one vote toward the selection of the one team at camp that most exemplifies true team spirit and camaraderie.
· The Herkie Team Award, for exemplifying the qualities upon which NCA was founded. These qualities are leadership, values, and teamwork.
Ten of Fort Hamilton’s cheerleaders were nominated for All-American, which goes to outstanding individuals who display strength in cheerleading skills, leadership ability, and overall camp attitude. Ashley Issacs was awarded the NCA All-American Award and will be offered the opportunity to perform with NCA at events throughout the country.
