The sweet smell of fried zeppole and the delirious fun of gravity-defying rides of the 2009 Giglio Festival, entertaining thousands of Brooklynites for the past two weeks, attracted one more notable visitor to Williamsburg: Mayor Michael Bloomberg.The mayor tried a box of “Dee Best” zeppole, chatted with Head Capo Patty Grande and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Monsignor Joseph Calise before shaking hands and posing with dozens of families. Despite the urging of the crowd, Mayor Bloomberg refrained from participating in the “Soak The Bloke” contest… at least until mayoral control of the city’s public schools is resolved.
