Civic group robbed in apparent inside job

The Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation, best known for its annual Atlantic Antic street fair every September, was robbed of more than $8,000 by an employee who took checks from the office and then made them out to a friend, cops said.

Police say that on July 21, LDC Executive Director, Lisa Shimamura, was going over the group’s checking statement and noticed that four unauthorized checks had been written on the LDC’s Citibank account and signed by “an unknown person.”

The checks were made out to a woman whom Shimamura does not know, she told police.

The total value of the checks was $8,221.32.

LDC board president Ian Kelley told The Brooklyn Papers that he could not comment because of “a settlement agreement” between the LDC and the alleged thief.

“Restitution has been made, so no one has been materially harmed,” he added.

He said that no arrests had been made, which again suggested that the robbery was an inside job.

Kelley declined to answer further questions.

The robbery will not deter the 32nd annual Atlantic Antic, slated for Sept. 17, rain or shine.
