Clones in a Jam

Jamestown Jammers 5
Cyclones 2

July 9 at MCU Park

The Cyclones bullpen fell apart after a strong start by Hansel Robles, as the Jamestown Jammers swept the pride of Coney Island in a three-game series at MCU Park.

The first five frames were an intense pitching duel between Robles and Jammers starter Ramon Del Orbe, as Robles struck out eight batters and limited Jamestown to one run on three hits and a walk. Meanwhile Del Orbe fanned four and gave up no runs, two hits, and two walks.

Mini-Mets skipper Rich Donnelly yanked Robles in the sixth for reliever David Wynn, and the Clones came back in the bottom half of the inning with shortstop Philip Evans chopping a grounder up the middle off of Jammers reliever Brian Ellington that drove in two runs.

Matthew Bowman replaced Wynn at the top of the seventh and plunked Jammers center fielder Juancito Martinez in the following inning. Martinez stole second, and then scored an RBI single. After Bowman gave up another hit to Jamestown third baseman Pedro Mendoza with just one out, Donnelly called in hurler John Mincone — who immediately gave up another RBI single.

Jammers relievers Jheyson Manzueta and Nick Wittgren held the Cyclones scoreless through the bottom of the inning, and the Jammers padded their lead with two more runs in the ninth.

The Cyclones are home again at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449–8497, www.brooklyncyclones.com] on July 17 at 7 pm as they take on the Hudson Valley Renegades.
