The Clones took an early lead and made it stick in their second bout against the State College Spikes on Sunday — a win that’s given the pride of Coney Island a one and a half game-lead over their New York-Penn League rivals.

After a two-hour rain delay, back-to-back doubles by Clones center fielder Brandon Nimmo and right fielder Jonathan Clark put the Mini-Mets on the board in the third. A sac fly from third baseman Dimas Ponce drove Clark home.

The Spikes came back with a home run blast off the bat of center fielder Barrett Barnes in the bottom of the fourth, but the Cyclones scored again in the fifth with an RBI single by designated hitter Alexander Sanchez.

The Spikes scraped up another run in the sixth frame, but Clones reliever Matthew Bowman held the State College start-ups scoreless the rest of the game, giving up just one hit in the final three innings.

Nimmo is batting .333 with 12 hits and three RBIs in the last 10 games. Ponce now has seven RBIs on the season three in the last two games.

The Cyclones are home again at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449–8497, www.brooklyncyclones.com] on July 17 at 7 pm as they take on the Hudson Valley Renegades.
