Clones rally against Monsters

Cyclones 4
Lake Monsters 3

July 29 at Vermont

The Cyclones stormed back, scoring four runs in the eighth inning, to take the opening game of the series against the Vermont Lake Monsters — and, most important, get out of last place.

Starter Brad Holt, who seemed to be getting better with every start, gave up all three Vermont runs in his three-plus innings of work, but the bullpen — Matias Carillo, Wendy Rosa, Steve Clyne and closer Yury Santana — blanked the Monsters the rest of the way, giving up no hits in the last 5-2/3 innings.

It all came down to the Cyclone eighth inning, which was one for the ages. Eric Campbell led off with a double and Sean Ratliff walked. After a groundout, Josh Satin loaded the bases with a single, and John Servidio promptly stroked a two-run double. Last year’s star J.R. Voyles capped the scoring with a clutch, two-out, two-RBI single.

Carillo got the win, pitching 3-2/3 innings and striking out six Lake Monsters. Santana got his team-leading seventh save.

The win lifted the 20–21 Cyclones out of last place (finally), though the team remains five games back of the hated Staten Island Yankees.
