Cyclones 4
Aberdeen 2
June 21 at MCU Park
The Cyclones erased an early 2–0 deficit and beat the Aberdeen IronBirds to even up their season record at 2–2.
Brooklyn’s Boys of Summer were down in the sixth when third baseman Anthony “Hail Ceasar” Chavez doubled to center field. Patrick Biondi’s single sent Chavez to third before L.J. “Mini Maz” Mazzilli doubled down the left field line, scoring Chavez and puttting Biondi at third. Biondi tied the game on a wild pitch by IronBird hurler Janser Severino.
In the seventh, both Alex “Clean” Sanchez and Chavez singled, before Biondi singled up the middle to give the Clones the lead. Shortstop Gavin Cecchini’s infield hit loaded the bases for Mini-Maz, who worked a walk that scored Chavez for the game’s final run.
Cyclones pitcher Akeel Morris took over in the sixth, throwing seven strikeouts in just over three innings of work to pick up the win.
Cyclones manager Rich Donnelly said Morris’ win was emblematic of the effort he put into spring training and his work on establishing different pitches.
“(Morris) earned his way onto this team in spring training,” Donnelly said. “He establishes his fastball, and has a great change-up. Then he turned the tables on them, and got strikeouts on his fastball.”
The Cyclones will look to sweep the IronBirds in the final game of the set tonight.
